Captian Cook’s Ship Endeavor Likely Located in Newport Harbor!

Captain Cook’s HMS Endeavor is likely at the bottom of Newport Harbor! This “bark” or three masted sailing ship was used when Captain Cook discovered Australia.   The Rhode Island Marine Archaology Project (RIMAP) believe that Endeavor (eventually renamed Lord Sandwich) is one of the 13 vessels that were scuttled in 1778 in Newport Harbor.   Using a grant from the Australian National Maritime Museum, RIMAP was able to locate documents in London that identify the groups of ships in this fleet of 13.  RIMAP knows the approximate area where the five ships were scuttled and they have already mapped out four.   You can read the full story here!  Visit RIMAP here.
