8 St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations in Rhode Island…Feeling Irish?

Whip up some corned beef and slip on a shade of green – St. Patrick’s Day is around the corner! If you’re looking to join in on the festivities, then get ready to feel luckier than a four-leaf clover because we’ve compiled the best Rhode Island has to offer. From parades to pubs, we’ve got you covered with Rhode Island’s top St. Patrick’s Day celebrations:

• Newport St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Saturday, March 11^th, 2017 at 11 a.m.

The 61^st edition of this annual parade is sure to bring fun for the whole family! Starting promptly at 11:00am from Newport City Hall, the parade will march onward to Carroll Avenue at Saint Augustin’s Church.  This year, the event is estimated to last 2 hours and will include: pipe bands, marching bands, fife & drum corps, clown units, reenactment units, and a host of local, state, and regional organizations.

Be sure to make room in your schedule for the committees’ exciting pre-parade happenings. This year they will be sponsoring the following:

• March 5: Grand Marshal Roast at 1:30 p.m.
• March 5 – 10: Newport Storm Pint nights at Newport Storm Brewery
• March 10: Big Daddy Award Ceremony & Pre-Parade Party at 6 p.m.
• March 11: The annual parade (which is followed by a celebration)

 

• Pat’s 5k (“Tour De Patrick”) (http://www.stpats5k.com/index.php)

Time to run off all that beer and beef! The Guinness “Tour De Patrick” is an annual 3 part 5K race series in Rhode Island, spanning from March 4^th to March 25^th. Participants can run or walk and will accumulate their times and score in the overall Tour De Patrick in addition to scoring at each individual race.

 

• Irish Ceilidhe Club of Rhode Island

Founded in 1956, this statewide club and pub hosts Irish events throughout the year. Of course, St. Patrick’s Day always brings a bit more cheer. If you’re looking to observe the day in a more authentic way, you can head to this club for some live step dancing, music, corned beef sandwiches and soda bread samplings.

Don’t worry if you missed the Newport parade – we’ve got another awesome one! With a mission to celebrate Irish American Heritage, Providence’s St. Patrick’s Day parade kicks off in the Smith Hill area at noon. Boasting festive floats and all of the green beer you can drink, this parade has become a tradition amongst locals. Quick tip: Be sure to follow them on twitter (@ProvIrishParade) if you attend so you can participate in their “best parade photo contest.”

Although this event is technically a part of the Newport festivities mentioned earlier, we felt it deserved its own category. Filled with bag pipers, the edge drumline, Irish step dancers, Tony the dancing cop, pirates, face painting, and more, this post-parade party is not one to be missed! There will even be a “How Green AM I” contest featuring a cash prize ($150, 100, & 50) and a $100 cash door prize, plus other giveaways. The best part is that admission is free!
