Shop Local means DRINK local too! Rhode Island has plenty to offer in the way of expert local craft brewers; from the nano-brewery to the full scale brewery, you will be able to find a beer that tempts your taste buds and brings forth feelings of the warmer weather to come. In no particular order, here are 10 (actually a few more) local brews you should sip this spring:
Proclamation Ale Company, 141 Fairgrounds Road West Kingston, RI 02892, 401-787-6450 (http://www.proclamationaleco.com/#!contact/c2q4), boasts “big beer from a small state”. The Plattelander, their ode to Belgian-style Saison’s, is brewed with the only highest quality European pilsner malts, oats and wheat and is topped off with a refreshing blend of American Sterling Hops, black pepper and the zest of orange peel. Let the Plattelander warm you from the inside out this spring; they are open for tasting and sales Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
The Tilted Barn Brewery, 1 Helmsley Pl, Exeter, Rhode Island, (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/tilted-barn-brewery) this weekend, open Saturdays for tastings from 1 to 4 p.m.. They will be offering Half-Mile, brewed on March 11th, the first day they could work with their big barn doors open, a tell tale sign that this brew will bring spring to your taste buds as it was brewed with love in the spirit of the season! Stay tuned; this brewery’s maple trees are tapped and collecting sap for their Maple Brown Brew scheduled for release in the next two weeks!
Grey Sail Brewing Company, 63 Canal Street, Westerly, RI , 401-212-7592 (http://greysailbrewing.com/visit-us/) will be offering this years first batch of their Hazy Day Belgian Wit. RIBlogger got the inside scoop straight from the brewer’s mouth who described this Sensational Summer seasonal as “dry, with a light malt background, complemented by citrus from the orange and lemon peel.” Hazy Day is on its way in the next few weeks, but in the meantime, stop by the Brewery every Friday between 3pm and 6pm for growler fills and take a tour or indulge with a tasting Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
Foolproof Brewing Company, 241 Grotto Avenue Pawtucket, RI 02860 | 401-721-5970, (http://www.foolproofbrewing.com/) brought it home, right to your own Backyahd IPA. Spring time is the best time to spice it up and start warming up. Foolproof recommends you get out the grill, slap some heat on your meat (or vegetables, what have you!) and let this bitter hop-heavy digestive “deliver an unspoken zen with a spatula in your other hand…”. The Backyahd IPA also has a big brother with a “malted backbone” that is also a sip of spring weather. They call him “King of the Yahd” and packs an 8.5% punch…so proceed with caution. Foolproof offer the opportunity to taste every Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m.. You can see this full scale glorious operation in action. Foolproof Brewing represents a perfect medley of a fierce entrepreneurial spirit and a deep passion for beer.
Bucket Brewery, 545 Pawtucket Ave Pawtucket, RI 401-722-1574 (http://bucketbrewery.com) enlightens us with Rhode Scholar, a light but complex easy drinking beer that pleases your palate with citrus flavors up front and finishes with the spice of pepper. Bucket Brewery offers tastings on Fridays and Saturdays. You can take a tour on Saturday and see how this artisan brewery can make magic with malt (and many other ingredients, of course)!
Crooked Current Brewery, 560 Mineral Spring Ave. Pawtucket, RI 02860. 401-473-8312, (http://crookedcurrentbrewery.com/) brings to life the quote by Caymus: “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer” through their Immortality IPA. This beer, like spring, starts off moderately bitter but resumes with a strong floral aroma complimented by notes of grapefruit and dries off with the heat of pepper. Join them Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. for tours and samples. You can also enjoy their beer and brushes events.
Newport Storm, 293 Jt Connell Hwy Newport, RI 401-849-5232, (http://www.newportstorm.com/visit.php) calls a spade a spade with their Classic New England Spring Irish Red Ale. Taking into account the cold that still remains despite the promise of summer to come, this brew is crisp, well balanced and rich. Their use of roasted malt gives this beer its Irish Red ruby hue as well as a subtle taste of hazelnut. Visit Newport Storm and try it for yourself, Sunday, Monday and Wednesday from 12 to 5 p.m., or Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 12 to 6 p.m.
Ravenous Brewing Company, 840 Cumberland Hill Road, Woonsocket, RI 02895, (http://www.ravenousbrew.com/?attachment_id=114), treats us to their Traditional American pale ale dedicated to the Blackstone Valley Region.
