George’s of Galilee…A Rhode Island Tradition

If you are a Rhode Islander, you know all about George’s of Galilee….but how long has it been since you’ve been there and do you really know what’s happening now?

George’s has been a RI landmark since 1948 when it began as a gathering place for the fishermen of Pt. Judith before or after a time out at sea.  News of good, local seafood and a warm inviting place to unwind travels fast in our small state and over the years, George’s has grown to become the largest oceanfront restaurant in the state. Many recent renovations have added to the charm of this picturesque seaside restaurant overlooking the fishing port of Galilee.

The bar has a rustic, nautical feel with ship’s lanterns hanging from the beams above and wooden cubbyholes holding bottles of wine.  The bar itself has a dark wood surface that makes you feel like you’re sitting on the deck of a ship.  From any seat at the bar you can see the boats sailing in and out of the harbor, the outdoor patio with evening outdoor lighting, and the beautiful dining room behind.  The dining room has wooden tables by the window overlooking the harbor and wooden booths that provide both privacy and scenery as well.  The black iron chandeliers hanging from the wooden beamed ceiling give a feeling of rustic charm as well as elegance. There are actually six dining rooms on two floors, al fresco dining, takeout, and even beach blanket service during the summer months.

Now….let’s think about the food.  There are so many choices on the menu that it’s hard to make a decision, especially if you are a lover of fresh seafood.  George’s offers farm to table vegetables and boat to plate seafood!  It doesn’t get any fresher than that. For starters, there are several kinds of  clam chowders as well as lobster bisque and a creamy dill seafood chowder.  Of course, no chowder would be complete without delicious clam cakes to accompany your choice.  The appetizers are plentiful with bounty from the ocean….mussels, clams, calamari, scallops, little necks, shrimp,  as well as organic salads, edamame dumplings, wings and more.  Dinner could be anything from burgers and fries to fish and chips to pasta and seafood specialties.

Every palate will be more than satisfied by the menu at George’s.  The food is delicious, the service is superb, the ambiance is warm and inviting, and the view is unparalleled.  A walk on the beach before or after dinner is about the only thing that could top off your experience at George’s of Galilee.  So if you haven’t visited the port of Galilee recently and are ready to feel ocean breezes on your face and smell the salt in the air, it’s time to take the drive and rediscover this RI icon.

Don’t forget to check out weekly specials and live entertainment as the summer months approach and if you’re really lucky, you’ll get there before the summer crowds who come from far and wide around the country to experience what Rhode Islanders have had in their back pocket since the 1940’s.  What a gem!
