The Alternative Food Co-op, 357 Main Street in downtown Wakefield is one of the local pioneers responsible for providing and promoting green practices on every level of their business. What was once a relatively small operation in the basement of an old URI building has been transformed into a fully equipped supermarket and in their case the “super” stands for super foods. The Co-op provides its consumers with organic, local and environmentally friendly options for every households’ needs from produce, meat, poultry and dairy to cleaning products, toiletries, and housewares. In addition they stock organic bulk items like baking goods, pastas, grains, nuts, dried fruits, spices, teas, oils and much much more. If you make the grave mistake of going shopping hungry, don’t fear the reaper, as soon as you open the door the delicious aromas of their diverse prepared foods awaits you. Take a load off in the in the winter or take your treats out to the back porch in the summer as they have made comfortable seating available inside and out. As stated earlier, the men and women who have pioneered this cooperative since the beginning remain dedicated to the best quality in foods grown and processed without the use of pesticides and chemicals. They have built a community within their community, and anyone can join by becoming a member and thus a part of the Co-op family.
