Contemporary Theater’s annual Wakefield Idol singing competition returns for 2023 on January 12th.  The 12-week event is a karaoke-style singing competition where 64 local singers compete for a $1000 cash prize! In the final rounds as the competition heats up, the audience votes to see who goes on.

Wakefield Idol runs for 12 consecutive Thursdays at 7:00pm starting with the opening round on January 12th and closing out with the finals on March 30th. Tickets can be purchased for individual dates or as a seasonal pass that gets you into every performance of Wakefield Idol 2023!

Matt Rife is one of the hottest up-and-coming comedians in the industry. His style is refreshingly genuine and quick witted. Performing since the age of 15 in Columbus, OH, he started his career opening for comedians such as Dane Cook, Ralphie May, and DeRay Davis. Matt made his television debut when he became the youngest cast member in history on MTV’s “Wild N Out”. He performed on the show for 4 seasons before moving on to hosting MTV’s reboot of “TRL”. Matt also appeared on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”, “Fresh Off The Boat”, MTV’s “The Challenge”, and BET’s “North Of The 10”. After 30 years Väsen has moved into a new phase. Olov Johansson and Mikael Marin continue as Väsen, but now as a duo with exciting new material. Roger Tallroth has chosen to leave the band for new projects.

Mikael and Olov have refined their sound and their stage presence to the extent that today they are quite unique. With their playful and perfect interplay, they seem to have telepathic communication as musicians, now touring and recording exclusively as a duo. They started playing together as teenagers around 1980 when they would regularly visit Curt and Ivar Tallroth and Eric Sahlström, older musicians who lived nearby in the Uppland region, where they would play and learn traditional music from them.

In this way they became a link in the living tradition that Swedish folk music has enjoyed through the centuries. In 1990, Olov became the first world champion of the nyckelharpa. He began to play the nyckelharpa in 1980 as a fourteen-year old, and was named a ‘riksspelman’ (master musician) in 1984. He is regarded as one of Sweden’s most prominent nyckelharpa players, and is an inspiration for numerous young performers on the instrument. As always, Mikael Marin’s five-string viola adds richness to every tune.

Contemporary Theater’s annual Wakefield Idol singing competition returns for 2023 on January 12th.  The 12-week event is a karaoke-style singing competition where 64 local singers compete for a $1000 cash prize! In the final rounds as the competition heats up, the audience votes to see who goes on.

Wakefield Idol runs for 12 consecutive Thursdays at 7:00pm starting with the opening round on January 12th and closing out with the finals on March 30th. Tickets can be purchased for individual dates or as a seasonal pass that gets you into every performance of Wakefield Idol 2023!
