The temperature is rising and our need to wander is coming out full force. Have a look at these parks where you can wander to your little hearts content. Not to mention, enjoy the breathtaking beauty of our little state!
1. Roger Williams Park in Providence has consistently been considered one of the best parks in the state,
and, according to the National Trust, is one of the best urban parks in the country. Roger Williams Park sits on more than 400 acres, and is a perfect spot for walking and boating. This is a particularly well-maintained and landscaped park. And, if you’re looking for animals, check out the Roger Williams Park Zoo.
2. Ninigret Park in Charlestown is another great spot. While it lacks Roger Williams Park’s manicured look, it more than makes up for it with its many available activities. Baseball fields, tennis and basketball courts, freshwater swimming, and a lot of space for biking, kite-flying, and more.
3. Speaking of kite flying, Brenton Point in Newport is a can’t miss. The spot is popular for kite flying due to its large grass fields and the wind that blows in from Narragansett Bay, Brenton Point is a great place to spend a day. Go picnicking on the grass, wander along the hiking paths looking for the old abandoned stone buildings, or just sit on the seawall and watch the breakers.
4. The Lincoln Woods State Park not only has great fishing and boating, it’s a popular spot for horse-back riding and, in the winter, is a choice spot for ice-skating. The park is just northwest of Pawtucket, and features one of the covered bridges that New England is known for.
5. Finally, there’s Prospect Terrace Park. This is, by a large margin, the smallest park on the list. However, that doesn’t mean it should be overlooked. Prospect Park offers a tranquil spot in the middle of busy College Hill, and has an unrivaled view of downtown. You’ll know it by the statue of Roger Williams, positioned facing the city’s skyline.
