Providence Roller Derby

The good people of Rhode Island have never necessarily been the most conventional bunch. And while Providence is certainly a city that loves its conventional sports, it also has a taste for something different. The Providence Roller Derby, a non-profit celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, offers an exiting spectator sporting event, and, if you’re tough enough, a chance to participate. There are three separate home teams, as well as two travel teams that play other roller derby teams from all over the northeast.

The next bout takes place at Ocean Club Skate in Narragansett, on March 29th at 6:00 PM. The roller derby’s Rhode Island Riveters will be facing off against two separate Connecticut roller derby teams. There will also be an exhibition match against the Massachussetts team the Bay State Brawlers. This exhibition will also be at Ocean Club Skate, on April the 26th. Tickets are $8 for adults, and $5 for children between five and  twelve. Children under five are admitted for free.

Providence Roller Derby has open recruitment events several times a year, and is female-only. Although roller derby is certainly a contact sport, the events are family friendly.
