Walks and Rambles in Rhody
Rhode Island, like much of southern New England, is covered with forests and hills. The deep forests that you can find in public parks all over the state are great for hiking. And, even if you’re out in Arcadia, you’re always only a few miles from civilization. From simple walks to strenuous hikes, Rhode Island has plenty of options.
If you’re looking for something scenic, convenient and not overly challenging, stop by the Roger Williams Park. Some people only think of the zoo when they think Roger Williams Park, but there’s much more to it than that. Take a walk by the ponds, check out the casino and the rose garden, or feed the ducks. You can even catch some geese wandering around the grounds, and you can find free parking all over the park. The entrance to the park is at 1000 Elmwood Avenue in Providence.
There’s also the Monetary in Cumberland. Although the majority of the monastery burned down in 1950, the grounds itself is a wonderful walking experience. You find, buried in the woods, the stone ruins of the monastery covered in 65 years of moss. The walking paths are a bit rocky, but there are great ponds, not too much in the way of steep hills, and is very dog friendly. The Monastery is located at 4097 Diamond Hill Road in Cumberland.
If you’re talking about walks in Rhode Island, you cannot pass by the Newport Cliff Walk. The Newport Cliff Walk is a three and a half mile cliffside walk, right near the Breakers and overlooking Sheep Point Cove.
If you’re in the West Greenwich area, check out the Tillinghast Pond Management Area. They have a number of waterfront trails. These trails are well-marked, and each has a number of scenic landmarks.
If you find yourself on Block Island this summer, you can find plenty of great hiking. For a start, check out the Greenway Walking Trails. The Greenway will take you from thick forest to dunes to the oceanfront.
I remember as a young boy in the 60s we went to an abandoned monetary on the beach. The waves wer huge and I had never seen so much sand in my life. My siblings and I enjoyed it so much that we returned several times over the years but for the life of me I cannot remember whare it was do you or one of your readers know what, perhaps ,maybe.
