Beaches in Southern Rhode Island
It may say “Washington County” on the map, but everyone in Rhode Island knows it’s South County. And what they know about South County is that it has great food, great hiking, and fantastic beaches. While there’s something to be said for visiting the beaches in the off-season, it is during the summer when the beaches in southern Rhode Island come to life.
Narragansett Town Beach is known as one of the best beaches in the state. It stretches for more than a mile of light sand, dotted with pavilions and beautiful beachfront houses and lined by a stone seawall. It’s a great spot for beachgoers of all stripes; the ocean usually doesn’t get too rough at the Narragansett beach, making it especially appealing to families, or surfers looking for clean waves.

East Matunuck State Beach is another great spot. This Matunuck beach is rockier and rougher than its Narragansett counterpart, this is still a fantastic beach. With its lighter crowds and stunning view, it’s a perfect spot for a walk along the shore. There is no pass required however parking is not free. Blue Shutters Town Beach in Charlestown sits on a thin strip of land between Ninigret Pond and the Block Island Sound. It’s a great picnic spot, great for families, concessions, and a beautiful stretch of beach that usually isn’t too crowded. There is a side without waves for those with young ones as well as a side with waves in case you want to body surf or perhaps skim board. Although a smaller spot, the Salty Brine State Beach in Narragansett is a beautiful beach. It’s only a few hundred feet long, and is protected by a seawall, meaning the waves are generally more mild. You can watch the Block Island Ferry sail by from this beach, and overlooks the Point Judith Harbor of Refuge. This is also considered one of the best spots for little kids as the break wall stops the waves from rolling in.
