Governor Gina Raimondo has signed the amended bill which legalizes the farming of hemp intended for commercial purposes. This makes Rhode Island the 31st state to allow the industrial farming of hemp. The bill previously allowed this right to state licensed Narragansett Tribe members and research universities. The bill now allows anyone who is qualified to grow hemp. Those individual and corporations interested in getting licenses will be able to do so 60 days after the bill becomes a law. The cost will be $2,500 and the license will need to be renewed every three years. Hemp can be used to make clothing, building supplies, oils, plastics and much more! It will be exciting to see what the hemp farming future holds for Rhode Island!
