Island has a unique history of diners that continues to this day. Here are just a few of the great, usually cheap, breakfast spots found around the state.

To start off big, there’s the Modern Diner on East Avenue in Pawtucket. The Modern Diner might look like a fake old-timey diner when you first see it, and there’s a reason for that. The Modern Diner, one of only two surviving streamline diners in the United States, was built in 1940 and has been operating since them. The Modern Diner was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, but still, it remains your archetypal diner: cheap, friendly, and delicious.

If you know Wakefield, you probably know Phil’s. This Main Street staple has been serving up fresh meals for years at a reasonable price. They have what might be the best home fries in the whole state, and you can never go wrong with Texas French Toast. Check out www.philsmainstreetgrille.com to learn more.  They have expanded quite a bit and even have a roof-top bar as well as upstairs and outdoor dining!

If you find yourself out in Exeter, check out the Middle of Nowhere Diner. Although surrounded by forest, the Middle of Nowhere Diner isn’t far off from I-95, and has a bright, comfortable atmosphere.

There’s the Pleasant View Diner in Smithfield, which offers all the familiar staples of the diner breakfast, with fish and chips, Johnny cakes and Belgian waffles to boot. Pleasant View Diner combines the tastes of Rhode Island with the classic breakfast foods we all love.

And there’s the West Side Diner on Westminster, another Rhode Island diner on the National Register of Historic Places, the West Side Diner, formerly Poirer’s Diner, was built in 1947 and continues to serve up hot, fresh meals to downtown Providence.
