After nearly centuries of deprivation, a brewery has finally setup shop in Portsmouth. And, lucky for you beer lovers, it’s a great one.
Opening with a bang this past St. Patrick’s Day, Ragged Island Brewing Company is the town’s first brewery in over 370 years. Formed by six hard-working friends, Ragged Island aims to “share Brewmaster John Almeida’s recipes” and their “passion for indulgent liquids.” The group first formed back in 2016, excited about the opportunity to share tasty beverages with their community.
“Our initial discussions were had while sampling John Almeida’s recipes,” Matt Gray, one of the brewery’s founders told us. “We knew that his home-brew was as good or better than some of the other commercial offerings we had tasted.” Driven by his distaste for store-brought beers, John started trying out recipes of his own in the mid-80s. Clearly, he found some fans in Matt and the company’s fellow partners.

“We felt confident that as a team with significant entrepreneurial experience we could create a successful venture here on Aquidneck Island,” Matt also told us. The Portsmouth location is particularly smart, given that it is far from the other breweries in the state. Signing the lease last summer, Ragged Island Brewing Company is booming on 200 High Point Ave.
“We hope Ragged Island will be seen as a great local option for craft beer fans,” Matt said when we asked him about the future, “and that our Taproom can be a fun place to visit and sample beer with friends.”
