Rhode Island Raised Livestock Association

Rhode Island Livestock Association is on a mission to strengthen our agricultural community in this state.  Creating farms that are economically viable is a necessity to allow the agricultural community to grow.  Surprisingly enough, as recently as 8 years ago, farms could not even sell their meat by the cut directly to the public or wholesale to a restaurant.  This left the farmers with little options.  They would either have to sell their meat to a small custom butcher shop or ship it to a larger facility.  Imagine that, the meat grown right around the corner is not able to be sold to the consumers in the area in a manner that was considered legal.  It was in 2003/2004 for that Don and Heather Minto began the process of obtaining a permit from the Rhode Island Department of Health to sell their meat.  The Minto’s hard work and dedication allowed them to persevere and obtain the permit.  There were a dozen farmers waiting to apply for their permit.  This led to the need for unity and camaraderie among fellow farmers. In 2007 there was what was referred to as a “kickoff” meeting for what is now known as RIRLA.  There is so much more to know and learn about the history of RIRLA and all of its integral participants.  Visit their site to learn more.  The agricultural community continues to strengthen and it is thanks to organization on such as this.  You can also find a list of farms on the Rhode Island Raised Livestock Association web site.
