Rock Spot Climbing

As the only non-climber in my family, I decided I needed to check out Rock Spot Climbing in Peace Dale, where my family disappears to on a regular basis.  Although I’m a non-climber, I was more impressed than daunted by the three story walls towering above me.  Brightly colored “holds” dotted the walls, which themselves are angled every which way.  Ropes suspended from the ceiling, the thickly padded floor, and the attentive staff reassured me that I would be safe.

After registering with the front desk, I was outfitted with shoes and a harness, and got a lesson.  Then I started climbing the walls – literally!  I was secured into one of the “belay” ropes, a rope secured to the climber’s harness, threaded through a pulley at the ceiling, and held by a partner on the ground.  Should I lose my grip, I know I won’t fall far.  Climbing is about problem-solving:  judging spaces and distances from hold to hold, maintaining balance on a vertical surface, positioning hands and feet as you work your way upwards.  My climbing partner encouraged me: “just a couple inches to your left there’s a little hold.” “If you switch your feet, you’ll be able to reach that hold on the right.”  “You’re almost there!”  I work out at a conventional gym, but when you climb you discover muscles you never knew existed.  After a few climbs, I was tired – what a great workout.  I undid my harness and took off the climbing shoes.  Resting downstairs on the main floor, I marveled at the experienced climbers, who scaled the walls.  It was more like watching a ballet than a sport.  Gracefully planning each move bringing them closer to the ceiling, it’s an exercise in strength, balance and flexibility.  All around me, other climbers – staff and customers alike – encouraged each other – congratulating each other on successes and good attempts. In a world of otherwise competitive sports, it was nice to be surrounded by camaraderie and incredibly positive energy.
