A bill currently in the Rhode Island State House seeks to give consumers the “right to know.” It asks that foods containing GMO’s, genetically modified organisms, be labeled as such. Consumers should have the right to know that these potentially harmful ingredients are in the foods they are consuming daily and feeding to their families. This bill is headed to the floor for a vote soon. Other states such as, Connecticut, Vermont and Maine have already passed bills requiring labeling. However, Maine and Connecticut are waiting for other states to follow suit before they will put the bill into action. It is important to note that other countries have actually banned the use of GMO’s! The US Dept of Agriculture has estimated that if the labeling goes into action, over 3/4 of the food in grocery stores will require labels. That is a disturbingly high number and I think it is more important than ever that we consumers have a right to know. Do you really want to be consuming what other countries have banned? There is a host of research on the internet…search around and you will be surprised at what you will find. Many of you are already informed and making choices to eliminate or limit GMO’s. If you have yet to delve into this topic, read up and make decisions that support the well being of you and your families.
