The Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial will be displayed at Fort Adams in Newport over Memorial Day Weekend May 26th – 29th, 2023. Hours are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 8am – 8pm, and Monday 8am – 6pm.

• In 2016, Operation Stand Down RI launched the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial which presented almost 7,000 combat boots adorned with flags and placards. Each boot represents the life of a U.S. service member killed in action post 9-11 in the Global War on Terror.

• The placard attached to each boot displays the name and photo of the fallen along with biographical information, military branch, rank and circumstances of death. The Memorial is updated yearly to incorporate additional U.S. service members killed in the ongoing Global War on Terror.

• The boots, adorned by the name placards, are alphabetized and organized by State and U.S. Territories. This allows those with a personal connection to locate a specific fallen hero’s boot. Many times, family, friends and comrades of the fallen can be seen solemnly viewing a particular boot and leaving a memento. Since its inception, over ten thousand visitors from all over the U.S. have visited during Memorial Day Weekend.

• The first three years the Memorial was displayed at Roger Williams Park in Providence. In 2019, the Memorial was displayed at Fort Adams State Park in Newport. Fort Adams is one of the oldest military posts in the Country.

Hello, I am David Leroy Harter Finch, author of Here There Be Monsters.

The book is about our violent childhoods at the hands of our abusive parents. It is about how we escaped and learned how to live again, learned to trust again and how we eventually learned to love again.

The book shows people what to look for, how to spot abuse. The explanation of this is in the stories I tell of our childhood.

The book also talks about recovery, learning how to cope, learning how to get past the abuse and become a survivor.

Above all I think the main message of the book is hope, there is hope for other survivors of child abuse. I want this book to be a beacon to others who might need help and in the act of reading my book will find some healing and hope.

The release event will be at Old Theatre Diner in Coventry Rhode Island on May 28th 1PM to 4PM

The event is being hosted by Lisa Conlon Lewis the executive director of Prevent Child Abuse Rhode Island, we are hoping to have the national organization supporting by then, it is in the works right now.

I live in Australia; I am unable to get to the event in person so it will be being live streamed on location. I am immunocompromised so travel is not safe for me since the advent of Covid. There will be signed bookplates there for anyone who buys the book onsite or purchased it in advance and show up with their book.

Steven Porter my publisher, owner of Stillwater River Publications will be on hand to give a speech about the development of my book and how came to be published.

There will be a buffet provided by Prevent Child Abuse Rhode Island and a fundraiser will kick off that day for that organization, I am partnering with them, and I hope to help raise funds to help them do their good work.
