Plans for the Fourth?

The Fourth of July is almost upon us, and no one does Independence Day like a former colony. Whether you’re in the mood for music, parades, or you just want to eat some food and watch the fireworks overhead, you’ll find something to do in the Ocean State this weekend.

This year the Fourth of July starts on Friday, but the events start before that. Starting on Tuesday the 1st and through Thursday the 3rd, Pawtucket’s resident baseball team, the PawSox, will be playing their usual games, with fireworks following at about 9:30. Running through Sunday, July 6th, the globally-loved and critically acclaimed Cirque du Soleil will be coming to Providence. Performing at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, this show will explore the beautiful and fictional land of Varekai. Of course, it would be nearly impossible to discuss Fourth of July in Rhode Island without talking about Bristol. While the parade itself did not begin until the early 19th century, the Bristol Fourth of July celebration itself began in 1785, making it not only the oldest Fourth of July celebration in the country, but also the oldest continuous celebration in the country. Featuring a concert series, a drum and bugle competition, a parade, a pagent, and even an Independence Day ball, Bristol’s festivities are not to be missed.
