Are You Vata, Pitta or Kapha?

Do you know your Doscha?  Your dosha or constiution is an integral piece of knowledge to help keep you balanced.  There are three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha.  Each one shares certain qualities and knowing these qualities will help you to make choices to keep yourself balanced and healthy.

Ayurveda (the sister science of Yoga) believes all that exists in the universe is made up of the five elements; earth, water, fire, air and space.  Everything existing in the universe also exists within each person. We all contain these same five elements, however, in varying degrees depending on the individual. When prana, the energetic equivalent of breath, mixes with the five elements, the doshas are formed.

Are You Vata, Pitta or Kapha?

Vata dosha is created when prana mixes with the two elements space and air.  The unique qualities of Vata are light, dry, airy, quick, and cold. Vata people are very tall or little. They are thin and either tall or short. They have asymmetrical features. When Vata people are in balance, they are creative and easily adaptable. They have an incredible way with words. When Vata people are out of balance, this manifests in fear and anxiety.
Pitta, heat, is made up of the elements fire and water. The unique qualities of Pitta are hot, sour, pungent, sharp and acidic. Pitta people have athletic builds and strong digestion. When Pittas are in balance, they are intelligent, cerebral and sharp. When a Pitta is out of balance they are hot and can anger quite easily.
Kapha is made up of the elements earth and water. The qualities of Kapha are slow, steady, heavy, oily, and cold. A Kapha in balance, will be loving, nurturing and grounded. When not in balance, they are needy, melancholy and heavy in body and mind.
