On June 26, 2018 at approximately 6:30 AM a caller reported seeing a black bear wandering around the concession stands at Old Mountain Field in Wakefield. Officers responded, located and tracked the bear. DEM Environmental Police were notified and also responded to the area. The bear was tracked near South Kingstown High School and was last spotted on North Road heading in a northerly direction. The bear was not at all aggressive and did not approach any humans. If a bear is spotted please do not approach them.

DEM has advised residents of the following safety tips:
• Take down bird feeders from April – early November.
•Do not feed pets outside, and if you do, take pet food dishes inside at night.
•Store garbage in sheds and/or garages.
•Take garbage out for pickup on the morning of collection – not the night before.
•Keep barbecue grills clean of grease.
•Do not put meat or sweet food scraps in your compost pile.

If a bear is spotted please contact DEM Division of Law Enforcement at 401-222-3070 or the South Kingstown Police Department 401-783-3321.
