Since it first sprung up in the summer of 1959, the Newport Folk Festival has become one of the most famous and looked forward to musical events in Rhode Island. Held every year at gorgeous Fort Adams in Newport, the festival will be celebrating its 55^th year the same way it celebrated the preceeding 54: with good music and a great, welcoming crowd.

This year, the festival will host four different stages, and runs from Friday, June 25^th to Sunday, July 27^th. With seventeen bands playing on Friday, twenty on Saturday and twenty one on Sunday, it promises to be a full weekend.

The Friday lineup kicks off the weekend with a bang, featuring legendary reggae musician and Rock and Roll hall of famer Jimmy Cliff; the lively, southern-inspired group Band of Horses; and the multi-talented Ryan Adams.

On Saturday, there is a veritable menagerie of talented musicians. Jack White, former lead singer and guitarist of the critically-acclaimed White Stripes, will be performing solo, along with famed acoustic trio Nickel Creek and local favorites Deer Tick.

Sunday features Conor Oberst, of Bright Eyes fame; Mavis Staples, the soul singer and civil rights activist; and a rousing performance by the Berklee Gospel and Roots Choir.

While you are not permitted to bring alcohol to the festival, there will be alcohol available in the Beer Garden. The Beer Garden serves both beer and wine from noon to 6:30 PM. You will have to be twenty one or older to enter the Beer Garden, and if you are twenty one or older, you’ll need to bring a valid picture ID.

The Newport Folk Festival is very family friendly, and there are even some events designed particularly with children in mind.
