The 31st Annual Folk Art Quilt Show is scheduled at South County Museum from Friday, September 16 through Sunday, September 18, from 10 am to 4 pm. In addition to an impressive exhibit of heirloom quilts from the Museum’s collection, over 100 contemporary quilts from all over New England will be on display.
This year’s show is something special according to Jim Crothers, Museum Director. “For the first time in many years, our curators will select heirloom quilts from the collection for display. Of special significance is the Reverend Andrew C. Strachen crazy quilt recently donated by local resident Donna Sciola. It is so noteworthy there is actually a website devoted to this one quilt. This very popular annual show has been developed and coordinated by Mary Loftes, Evie Cherms, and Blaire Gagnon. Submission forms including the size, pattern, method of quilting, and a photograph are reviewed in July and August. Quilters drop off their quilts on the Monday of the show week, and a core of volunteers spend the next three days hanging the quilts throughout the museum’s Metz Exhibit Hall. When the show opens on Friday a groups of “white glovers” are on site wearing their white cotton gloves to handle the quilts if visitors wish to closely examine them or see the reverse side. A special viewing for group tours is scheduled for Thursday, September 15, and on Saturday there are quilting activities designed specifically for young children. Visitors will also have an opportunity to submit a “Viewer’s Choice” ballot to determine the top three quilts of this year’s show. In addition, raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win a quilt especially designed and quilted by members of the Folk Art Quilts for this exhibit.
In addition to the quilt show, the Museum will be holding its Family Day on Saturday, September 17 with activities and craft demonstrations of interest for the whole family. Admission to the quilt show is $10; Museum members are free.
