Should Recess be Required in Rhode Island? Share Your Thoughts…

By now you have most likely heard that RI lawmakers are in the process of discussing recess requirements in the public schools.  The proposed bill would require public schools from grades K-5 to give students 20 consecutive minutes of free play.  This means that the recess could not be taken away for any reason including disciplinary or academic reasons.  What do you think?  Share your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. I find this necessary. Children need that time to release and free their mind. EVERYONE NEEDS A BREAK! As adults we’re used to being stationary for a long period of time and children do not hold responsibilities as adults. Recess helps them to focus, it develops social skills, everyone needs sunlight (vitamin D), and God knows our children need the exercise.

  2. The art of play is being buried and in danger of becoming extinct. I feel it is critical to developing minds to breathe in the outside air spend some part of every day in nature. Share their dreams with peers. Role play ideas and fantasies of who they may become. And lastly carefree social interaction and physical exercise. To even ask the question should there be recess is like asking if there should be soil for the garden

  3. Yes. Everyone deserves a break. Especially youth.
