Close to two hundred walkers, volunteers and supporters from Rhode Island and beyond embarked on a weekend journey Friday morning in support of the Pawtucket based non-profit Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Friday consisted of a visit to Ocean State Job Lot headquarters in North Kingstown for lunch and an emotional “decorated shoe display” and Saturday they will stroll Main Street in East Greenwich.
This is the third year of Gloria Gemma’s multi-day walk, GloriDays, and the first year the walk is based at Goddard Memorial State Park. 100 fundraisers will walk either 44 miles over three days, or 24 miles over two days through Warwick, East Greenwich and North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
Arthur Parise, Jr. of Warwick will be walking 44 miles this weekend for the third year in honor of his mother. When entering high school, his mother got “the call.” After a double mastectomy, she was cancer free but unfortunately due to complications, his mother passed away five years ago. Arthur stated, “My mother’s legacy carries on with every step I take and every penny I raise… I walk for those who can’t.” Arthur is hopeful that the next generation won’t have to ask “what is breast cancer?”
Together, participants and walkers have raised nearly $150,000 in support of Gloria Gemma. Money raised will support FREE survivor programs including 20+ holistic programs and services to heal mind, body and spirit and other programs offered through the Foundation including the Young Survivors program, community outreach education through the Hope Bus and Gloria’s Angels which provides healthy meals, oncology massage and comfort care bags for those newly diagnosed or in treatment.
“GloriDays is a special celebration of friendship, compassion and support for our community. The energy is amazing and the impact of the event on all participants lasts well beyond just this weekend,” said Maria Gemma, Executive Director at Gloria Gemma. “This is truly a weekend journey of inspiration, friendship and celebrating life.”
