The Jamestown-Newport Ferry!

The Jamestown-Newport Ferry has begun service between Jamestown, Rose Island, Fort Adams, Newport, and Goat Island for the 2015 season. More information, including fares and schedules is available here: http://jamestownnewportferry.com/

Before 1940, when the Jamestown Bridge connected North Kingstown and Conanicut Island and 1969 when the Newport Bridge spanned the Bay between Jamestown and Newport, ferries were the way to go.

Sail ferries were replaced with a steam ferry in 1872, opening Conanicut Island to increased tourism and commerce from Newport, in part prompting a tripling of the Island’s population between 1870 and 1900.

While most of the historical ferries plying Narragansett Bay have gone the way of the horseless carriage and the passenger pigeon, the Jamestown-Newport Ferry’s 2015 season begins in May for comfortable, scenic, and convenient access between these two beautiful waterfront locations.

A round-trip ticket allows for unlimited hop-on and off. One-way tickets are also available. The ferry is a great way to see the Bay and the boats docked at Newport. It is also a way to avoid the hassle of parking in Newport – you can arrive in style for a day or evening of adventure in Newport.

– don’t miss the boat!
