How to Set Goals that Stick!

Guess what! Spring is just around the corner! That being said, did you set some healthy goals for the new year? Now is the time to evaluate where you are and make sure you don’t fall into the “new year, new you” rut. Take the time and check in and make sure that the goals you set for the new year are still first and foremost on your mind. The new year goal setting can have a bandwagon mentality to it. They tend to be the busiest days at the gym, everyone you see is changing their eating habits and so on and so forth. However, over the next 4-8 weeks…the dedication dwindles, and only those that have genuinely set goals and made a plan to achieve them will still be going. We are stepping in to ask you to evaluate where you are and where you are going. Here is how you can avoid falling off the New Year Wagon and set goals that will stick!

• Evaluate Where You Are: Think back to the goals you had set for yourself and look at where you are now. Remember, you are evaluating yourself….be kind to yourself. Reevaluating means, you will be making new plans to stay on target and to plan for your success. Ask yourself a few questions:
o Are you where you thought you would be?
o If so, what made you successful thus far? Can you amp up your progress?
o If not, what are the obstacles? Were your goals too lofty? Did you sidetrack or lose sight of your goals?

• Plan for the Future: Now that you have asked yourself a few questions and evaluated where you are…use this knowledge to plan for the future. It is of the utmost importance that you realize that you are your most important ally. Be kind to yourself and make plans for success…even if you are disappointed about where you are now. This is the moment to pick yourself up and get going back on track. If you feel good about your progress, then revel in your success and keep on going. Use the forward motion to imagine your future success! Here are a few tips to help you plan for the future (as in moments from reading this).
o Write your goals down.
o Create benchmarks and break down your progress so that you can regularly check in on yourself.
o Celebrate your successes. All along the way you are making progress, take time to reflect and to reward yourself as you take your journey to a healthier you.
o Create rituals to remind yourself of your goals. For example, create a mantra to say to yourself every morning when you wake up.

• Stay Present and Motivated: This is the key to your success. All along the journey, temptation and obstacles will pop up everywhere. That birthday cake on the table or that friend who wants you to skip your workout…each day you need to be present and remain motivated. Wake up with intention and go to bed feeling satisfied with your success. If temptation does get the best of you, move on and let it be in the past. Dwell on your accomplishments and keep a positive outlook throughout your journey. Be present, focus on the now with an eye on your future.
