Visiting Block Island This Summer?

Rhode Island undergoes a transformation as winter leaves and summer approaches, and nowhere is that more true than on Block Island. The island, which during the winter has a population of less than a thousand, turns into one of the best spots in the state during the summer months. If  you’re going to be visiting Block Island this summer, here are a few suggestions.

Block Island has a number of great restaurants. Check out the Surf Hotel, a restored 19th century Victorian Hotel that sits right on the beach, overlooking the harbor. You can also rent one of their quaint, comfortable rooms if you’re staying on the island overnight.

Or, check out Dead Eye Dick’s, located right on Block Island’s harbor, the Great Salt Pond. Have fresh seafood—such as their carefully-prepared lobster—or treat yourself to a steak, and watch boats come in and out of the Great Salt Pond.

If you are going to Block Island, it would be a big mistake to miss the beaches. Check out Mansion Beach, a wide curve of sand on the east side of the island. Or go to Mohegan Bluffs. Down a long set of wooden stairs, you’ll find a small beach, great for swimming, that is hidden from the outside world by high bluffs on three sides.

For a unique gift, you should definitely give Block Island’s many shops a look. Check out Eylandt Antiques and you might just find a hidden treasure, or stop by the Block Island Trading Company for a souvenir, from maps of the island to display boat models.

And, when the sun sets and you’re still looking for something to do, consider one of Block Island’s bars and clubs. Ballard’s Inn is a beach club with a full restaurant and bar, including a couple fantastic frozen cocktails sure to cool you off. Or you could go to the Poor People’s Pub, a venue that boasts cold drinks and a relaxed, informal atmosphere.

Visiting Block Island this summer will prove to be an incredible experience!
