7 Beautiful Snowy Parks and Places around RI

Well it has happened!  We blinked and now the Holiday Season is behind us.  What does that mean?  A few more months of cold and snowy weather.  And for some, the perfect opportunity for scenic meanders through our local woods and parks.    This little state is largely known  for the beauty of its  seasons including the cold and snowy winters. Here are seven beautiful spots around Rhode Island that you can enjoy even in the dead of a snow-covered winter.

1.  For a start, there’s Brenton Point in Newport. You might try to find a day with low wind; there’s a reason Brenton Point attracts so many kite fliers. But come winter, the wide, gently sloping fields of Brenton Point are a great place to play and just wander around.

2.  And just south of Providence, Roger Williams Park Zoo is a beautiful spot year-round. In the winter, its big trees, various hills, and classical architecture makes for a rather picturesque experience. If you’re just looking for a walk, take a stroll through the gently curving paved paths that loop around the park.

3.  There’s Ninigret Park as well, an especially good spot if you’re looking to do some cross-country skiing, or pulling kids along in a sled. Their short looping bike path makes for a perfect place to walk.   Ninigret Park is located at 4540 South County Trail in Charlestown.

4.  The Sachuest Point Wildlife Refuge in Newport not only has great trails, it is also home to an influx of Snowy Owls during this time of year. And at almost 250 acres, Sachuest Point offers a lot of space for hiking. It is located on Sachuest Point Road in Newport.

5.   Lincoln Woods State Park, is a huge, beautiful park, in the middle of which is the beautiful Olney Pond. While you need to make sure the ice is thick enough—if you’re unsure, always check with a park official—Olney Pond does freeze over in the winter. It is a great spot if you’re looking to skate or you just want to experience what its like walking across a pond. Lincoln Woods State Park is located at 2 Manchester Print Works Road in Lincoln.

6.  Trustom Pond in Matunuck offers several marked trails that lead you out towards the ocean.  This area is known for bird watching as well as its slat water pond habitat. Located on over 750 acres, there is certainly plenty of space to hike.  It is home to over 300 bird species and 40 mammal species…you never know what you might see!  To learn more, click here. 

7.  Arcadia Management Area is over 14,000 acres of wooded and snowy adventures.  There are endless miles of gravel roads and well maintained hiking trails.  It is easy to feel far from home once you head off into this beautiful forest.  Be sure to take note of hunting seasons and follow the regulations.  Click here for more details.
